As someone who makes hiring decisions within your organization, what matters more, education or experience?

Education means that candidates possess layers of understanding, context, and knowledge about your industry and their particular role within it. It also demonstrates that candidates have a passion for the role and have invested significant time, energy, and money into the possibility of working with you. That’s dedication. That’s passion.

On the other hand, experience means that the onboarding process will be smooth and the learning curve will be short. You may even discover unexpected ways to improve your process. There’s a lot of value here.

Ideally your candidate will possess both education and experience, but that leaves recent graduates at a significant disadvantage.

Being proud of our origins, Sofvie Inc. feels that giving back to the community is not only good for karma, it’s necessary. Being as prepared as humanly possible for the workforce  can only produce stronger results for everyone involved. This means that as older generations are displaced by younger workers, integrity and quality will remain intact. Rather than catching up to the rest of the industry, organizations with younger workforces are poised to innovate and excel.

Here is how Sofive Inc. is contributing to this effort:

Local Student Placement Program:

graduates

We understand that building a career requires both expertise and experience with the latter being sometimes hard to come by. We want to give our neighbours and next-generation health and safety experts as many advantages they can get their hands on.

This is why we consistently make ourselves available for student projects, Capstone groups, student placements, and give recent graduates first consideration when seeking to fill a new role within our organization.

The experience has been wonderful. Sofvie was recently named as a Top 3 Employers of Distinction (link to award announcement) by Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology and have been exposed to a plethora of fresh ideas and new ways of looking at things.

Local Health and Safety Partners:

Community

Our health and safety management software goes a long way in creating a zero harm workplace, but we can’t do it alone. This process requires proper health and safety frameworks, technology that is currently under development, personal protective equipment (PPE), access to safety information, and people. We have forged relationships with many local businesses because they share the same vision that we do; sending workers home safely at the end of each day.

Working with the community is far from being a one-way street. Yes, students and local businesses receive the value that they are looking for. Beyond that, Sofvie Inc. gains insights into how the next generation learns, thinks, acts, and what motivates them. As a software company dedicated to a Zero Harm Workplace, it is critical to understand how end users expect software to work as well as the real-life scenarios in which it will be used. We have nailed it for this current generation of workers. However, one never knows what the future holds. Maintaining a relationship with those who will use the software in the future translates into adaptive UX and functionality as opposed to reacting to unexpected demand. In short, by the time the next generation is in charge we will have already catered to their needs.

We hold a tremendous amount of appreciation for the people and organizations that we’ve been fortunate enough to work with. Thank you.
